Item: Nothing New in the West is a 1928 novel by Erich Maria Remarque that depicts the horrors of the First World War from the perspective of a young soldier. Although Remarque himself described the book as apolitical, it has become a classic of world literature as an anti-war novel. In literary studies, the novel is predominantly assigned to the New Objectivity .
Nothing New in the West appeared as a preprint from November 10, 1928 in the Vossische Zeitung, and in book form by Propyläen Verlag on January 29, 1929. According to the publisher, it achieved a circulation of 450,000 copies within eleven weeks. It was translated into 26 languages that same year. To date, there are editions in over 50 languages, and estimated sales figures worldwide (as of 2007) are over 20 million.
Remarque made enemies of the National Socialists with his novel. As part of their character assassination campaign against the unpopular author, they questioned his authenticity and spread the rumor that he had not taken part in the First World War at all. During the National Socialist book burnings in 1933, numerous copies of Nothing New in the West were destroyed.
The work achieved further fame through the 1930 American film adaptation by Lewis Milestone, which won two Oscars. The novel was made into a television film by Delbert Mann in 1979 under the same title. In 2022, director Edward Berger created the first German film adaptation of the book. The film won four Oscars at the 2023 Academy Awards.
