Item: the Latvian Legion was created in January 1943 on the orders of Adolf Hitler following a request by Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS. The initial core of the force was populated by Latvian Police Battalions, which were formed starting in 1941 for security duties and already serving on the Eastern Front under Wehrmacht command. While members of Holocaust perpetrator Arajs Kommando subsequently joined the Legion, this was late in the war as the Kommando was demobilized from anti-partisan and anti-Jewish action, with the first former Arajs unit attached to the Legion in December, 1944.
Condition: skull is in good condition with its original prongs still in place. the skull is made of zinc and has been cleaned somewhere in time. The Latvian made field shield is made from cardboard and red fabric around it, with SS silver wire attached around the shield. the shield doesnt light up under UV light as can be seen on the pictures. Nice and very rare Latvian SS set!
Item: Het Letse Legioen werd in januari 1943 opgericht op bevel van Adolf Hitler op verzoek van Heinrich Himmler, hoofd van de SS. De aanvankelijke kern van de strijdmacht werd bevolkt door Letse politiebataljons, die vanaf 1941 werden gevormd voor veiligheidstaken en al onder bevel van de Wehrmacht aan het oostfront dienden. Terwijl leden van de Holocaust-daders, het Arajs Kommando, zich vervolgens bij het Legioen voegden, was dit laat in de oorlog toen het Kommando werd gedemobiliseerd van anti-partijgebonden en anti-Joodse actie, waarbij de eerste voormalige Arajs-eenheid in december 1944 aan het Legioen werd toegevoegd.
Conditie: schedel is in goede staat met de originele tanden nog op zijn plaats. de schedel is van zink en is ergens in de tijd schoongemaakt. Het in Letland gemaakte veldschild is gemaakt van karton en rode stof eromheen, met SS-zilverdraad rond het schild bevestigd. het schild licht niet op onder UV-licht, zoals te zien is op de foto's. Mooie en zeer zeldzame Letse SS set!
